D-Pinitol is a precursor for biologically active fluorinated isosteres of inositol. These compounds have been shown to inhibit cell growth. D-Pinitol has also demonstrated antidiabetic properties in studies with mice, along with the ability to mediate salt stress in a wide range of plants.
